Press release dated 26/02/2019
Wit-Bier is the Belgian interpretation of a wheat beer.
Brewed with coriander and bitter orange peel: Störtebeker Braumanufaktur is expanding its range and bringing its first limited-edition brew to market with a fruity, tangy Wit-Bier. The recipe comes courtesy of Markus Krenkler, winner of the second German Homebrewing Championship at the Störtebeker Brauquartier.
With a range already encompassing 19 speciality beers that eschew formulaic beer flavours, Störtebeker Braumanufaktur now presents a new variety and its first ever limited-edition beer: the fruity, tangy Wit-Bier is available immediately from the Störtebeker brewery shop and can soon be purchased online and from selected retailers.
“Witbier is the Belgian version of a wheat beer”, says master brewer and innovation manager Jens Reineke. “The addition of coriander and bitter orange peel gives it its typical tangy character. Unmalted wheat ensures a creamy mouthfeel”, Reineke continues. The sparkling and refreshing Wit-Bier is therefore the perfect beer for warm days.
“Similar to Germany, Belgium has a very long brewing tradition and an immense variety of different beer styles. We are pleased to further enrich our range with this speciality beer”, says Jens Reineke.
The recipe for the new Wit-Bier was not invented by the Störtebeker brewers, however – the creator of this beer is Markus Krenkler from Seevetal, the reigning German homebrewing champion. Last year, he competed and won against just under 120 brewers from around Germany at the second German Homebrewing Championship at the Störtebeker brewery in Stralsund. “Markus’ beer impressed the jury of master brewers, beer sommeliers and drinks technicians, thanks to his classic recipe and the creamy-rich flavour”, reports Reineke.
As his prize, Krenkler was given the green light to brew his recipe on a large scale at Störtebeker Braumanufaktur. The Wit-Bier is now available to buy for the period of one year at the Störtebeker brewery shop, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, and the online shop, as well as from selected retailers. “We are pleased to establish a limited-edition product line with the Wit-Bier. In future, every winning beer at the German Homebrewing Championship will be available to purchase for a season as a Störtebeker speciality beer”, Reineke declares.
