Success at the European Beer Star 2018: Störtebeker takes home three bronze medals

Press release dated 15/11/2018

More evidence of our quality: at this year’s European Beer Star, Stralsund-based Störtebeker Braumanufaktur was awarded three bronze medals, including for the new Alcohol-Free Atlantik Ale. An outstanding result in light of the stiff international competition. A total of 2,344 beers from 32 countries faced the challenge this year and competed against one another at the 15th European Beer Star. This is a new record in terms of participant numbers. Alongside the Alcohol-Free Atlantik Ale, which won bronze in the “Alcohol-free top-fermented beer” category, the Schwarzbier (“German-style Schwarzbier” category) was also able to win the prestigious award. As the best German beer, the Roggen-Weizen (rye-based wheat beer) also took bronze in the “Beer with alternative cereals” category.

“The European Beer Star is one of the most sought-after trophies in the brewery industry. We are very proud to once more be among the award-winning beers in 2018”, says a happy Jürgen Nordmann, proprietor of Störtebeker Braumanufaktur. “The award has long since established itself as the showcase for the best beers in the world”, is how Oliver Dawid, executive managing director of Private Brauereien Bayern, describes the competition.
Owing to the record-breaking number of entries, tasting the submitted beers turned into a real marathon event: across two days, 144 beer and brewing experts evaluated the colour, smell, taste, aroma profile and overall impression of the speciality beers and awarded one gold, silver and bronze medal per category. Karsten Triebe, marketing director at Störtebeker Braumanufaktur, was once more among the jury members. “The quality of the beers was extremely high this year. We found the decision-making tougher than ever before”, says Triebe.
The awarding of the European Beer Star took place on 14 November at BrauBeviale, one of Europe’s leading trade fairs for the production and marketing of beer. Master brewer Christoph Puttnies, operations manager Sascha Wunderlich and innovation manager Jens Reineke attended the ceremony to accept the award on behalf of Störtebeker Braumanufaktur.

History of the European Beer Star
Awarded since 2004, the European Beer Star has become one of the most prestigious accolades for European beers. The competition was founded by the “Private Brauereien Deutschland” (“Private Breweries of Germany”) and “Private Brauereien Bayern” (“Private Breweries of Bavaria”) associations in collaboration with the “Association of Small and Independent Breweries in Europe”. It is specifically aimed at breweries from around the world that are dedicated to the traditional, European style of brewing. The award only considers beer styles which originate in Europe. Unlike other awards, there is only one winner per category. This makes the European Beer Star one of the world’s toughest competitions.
