The world’s most beautiful beer bottle: Eisbock wins WorldStar Packaging Award

press release 12/25/2017

Our Eisbock beers impressed the judges with their design, which underscores both the striking flavour and the unusual production process of these gourmet beers.

Award-winning quality, inside and out: After receiving awards at the European Beer Star and Meiningers Craft Beer Award, the Störtebeker Eisbock beers have now also won the WorldStar Packaging Award for their extraordinary design. Not only does Störtebeker now have the most beautiful beer crate in the world, it also has the most beautiful bottle.

“Our Eisbock beers impressed the judges with their design, which underscores both the striking flavour and the unusual production process of these gourmet beers,” explains Jürgen Nordmann, owner of Störtebeker Braumanufaktur. Eisbock beers belong to the family of Starkbiere (strong beers). To make Eisbock, the finished beer undergoes fractional distillation at ultra-low temperatures to freeze any water content. This yields beer with a higher percentage of alcohol. In terms of flavour, the aromas become more concentrated. The results are full-bodied and complex gourmet beers.

“This label is the result of one year’s work”, says Nordmann. “So we’re obviously incredibly of this award.” The unobtrusive label in black and white in combination with different metallic tones symbolises the beers’ sophisticated flavours and the cold temperatures by which these speciality beers are produced. To ensure maximum product visibility, memorability and brand recognition on retail shelving, in particular, the designers developed a novel feature: a protruding red flag on the bottle neck - a first in the realm of cold glue adhesives. The flag is applied at high speed and automatically during the bottling process. To this end, engineers joined forces with the company Krones AG – one of the most renowned manufacturers of beverage systems – to develop a one-of-a-kind machine, unique to Störtebeker Braumanufaktur. Among the craft beer range, these beers are expected to increase turnover thanks to their high drinkability, emotional product story and eye-catching design”, Nordmann continues.
“The special design and unique technology involved in making the Eisbock beers sets new standards for the entire industry”, explains the panel about its decision. “The packaging design of the Störtebeker Eisbock beers means they stand head and shoulders above all other beers on the market”. Besides winning the WorldStar Packaging Award, the brewery is also shortlisted for the World Packaging Organisation’s Marketing award. “This means that we also get to go on stage to celebrate our marketing strategy and concept behind the Eisbock beers”, Nordmann declares happily.

The official WorldStar Packaging Awards ceremony, including the Marketing Award, will be held on Australia’s Gold Coast on 2 May 2018.
Störtebeker Braumanufaktur impressed the judges at the World Packaging Organisation as early as 2013, when it showed off its wood-effect treasure chest. This is testament to the Stralsund brewers’ exacting standards – not only in relation to their speciality beers but also when it comes to their packaging.

The WorldStar Packaging Award is presented by the World Packaging Organisation every year. 38 countries submitted a total of 318 products, of which 64 belonged to the Beverages category; the 16-strong panel of experts in Rio de Janeiro subsequently chose the products demonstrating real packaging excellence. The victors included 10 packaging designs from Germany – Störtebeker’s Eisbock beers were among them.
